Indian Idol Back ground

Indian Idol is a popular television show on Indian television, a singing talent contest to determine the best undiscovered young singer in the country. It is based on the international Idol series format, launched by UK show Pop Idol.

The program airs two back-to-back prime-time shows a week: the first night features an hour of performances while the second night features an elimination. The show is produced and broadcasted on Sony TV, India and is coproduced with FremantleMedia (makers of the Idol series), which is owned by the German media corporation Bertelsmann.

Wild Card Episode in Indian Idol

Wild Card Episode
On June 15th-18th the Indian Idol Wild Card Challenge took place. 18 of the previously eliminated contestants competed once again for a place in the finals. The judges selected 7 contestants who they thought should have had a place in the finals. After performing on June 15, 3 of them were voted out. On June 18th, 2 out of the remaining 4 contestants will be admitted into the Indian Idol Gala Round. One contestant out of the two will be selected by public vote and the second will be selected by the judges.

Indian Idol 3 - Rules and Regulatioons

Participants must be between 16-30 years of age as on February 10, 2007. Participant should be a citizen of India. Participants shall not be a professional singer and shall not be under any contract which will prohibit him/her from entering into any management contract/recording contract and/or merchandising contract. Participants should not have any criminal record and/or be undischarged insolventand/or of an unsound mind. The auditions will be held only in Hindi language. Participants will be required to fill an application form at the venue of the auditions. Participants who are between 16-18 years must be accompanied by their natural/legal guardian and all participants must carry proof of age and identity such as birth certificate/ school leaving certificate/ ration card/college id/ driving license/passport/ voter's ID/ pan card along with one (1) passport size photograph plus one (1) full length and one (1) frontal photograph. The winner will enter into a Prize Agreement with SET India Private Limited(“SET”) and a Recording Agreement with Sony BMG for a music album. The top 30 finalists of season 2 (i.e. "Indian Idol – 2") will not be allowed to participate in auditions this year.

Indian Idol Contest Format

The show is segmented into four rounds:

Theatre round

Held in Mumbai, contestants perform one song to the panel of judges. The deliberations must limit the contender pool to 28 hopefuls.

Piano round

The 28 semifinalists are split up into four groups of seven each; two girl groups, two boy groups. From each group three finalists are chosen by the public who go on to form the final 12.

Gala round

One contestant is eliminated each week by viewer votes.
